Where Okemos's Saturday Farmers Market Goes When the Pavilion Turns Into an Ice Rink

The Meridian Township Farmers' Market has three outdoor Saturdays left at Marketplace on the Green. On November 28, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, it moves into Meridian Mall and runs every Saturday through December 19. After that, it meets only on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays of each month through April.

Most of that is missing from the Township's main Farmers' Market page. It lists Saturdays outdoors from May through November and an indoor market from January through April, and it says nothing about December. The December dates are on the Township's own vendor registration schedule, where sellers book their stalls. That schedule shows four indoor Saturdays in a row before Christmas, so December gets more market days than any other winter month.

The calendar between now and Christmas

The Township's winter vendor program, listed as "S-Wint26 - SAT: NOV - DEC 2026 Seasonal," sets every date below for 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Saturday Location
November 7 Marketplace on the Green, 1995 Central Park Drive
November 14 Marketplace on the Green
November 21 Marketplace on the Green, last outdoor date
November 28 Meridian Mall, first indoor date
December 5 Meridian Mall
December 12 Meridian Mall
December 19 Meridian Mall

If you're used to summer hours, note the later start. The Township page says Saturday markets open at 10:00 a.m. in November, not 8:00 a.m. That 10:00 a.m. opening stays in place through the indoor season.

Thanksgiving Saturday is moving day

None of this is new. Last fall's schedule followed the same pattern, and the Township announced it in an October 27, 2025 press release that later appeared in its November board meeting packet. The 2025 market moved indoors on November 29, also the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and the release spelled out the December plan plainly.

"Leading up to Christmas, the market will be held every Saturday. Starting on January 3, 2026, the market will be held on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays of each month."

That release placed the indoor market in the JCPenney corridor of Meridian Mall. It also promised the "largest indoor market yet, with up to 80 vendors offering fresh produce, baked goods, prepared foods, unique crafts, gifts, and more." The Township's current page still lists the JCPenney wing as the winter market's home. This year's vendor schedule only says "Meridian Mall," though, so check the Township page the week of November 28 before you head over.

The 2025 release also said SNAP recipients can use a Michigan Bridge Card at the market, and that SNAP tokens and Double Up Food Bucks are handed out and accepted year-round. That stays true after the move indoors.

December is the month to stock up, because January thins out

The weekly December run makes sense once you look at what comes next. From January through April, the Township lists the indoor market on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays of each month. So you get two Saturdays in most months and three in a month with five Saturdays, usually two weeks apart. If 2027 follows that published pattern, January's Saturdays would be the 2nd, 16th, and 30th. The Township hasn't posted those dates yet. Last year's dates were in a release that came out at the end of October.

One vendor's calendar lines up with the Township's. Titus Farms, on the Township's October 24 vendor list, sells a Winter Share that runs November through April for $35 per pickup. It also sells a shorter Holiday Share for November and December at $37 per pickup. Okemos pickups happen Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Meridian market. According to the farm, November pickups are outdoors and December through April pickups are inside Meridian Mall. Its December pickup windows end on December 5 and December 19, and both of those Saturdays are on the Township's indoor schedule.

The pavilion gets a second job on December 1

Three days after the market moves out, Marketplace on the Green becomes a skating rink. The Township's winter recreation page lists a 40-by-92-foot outdoor artificial rink at the pavilion. It's open for free public skating from December 1 through March 31, seven days a week, from dawn until 9:00 p.m.

A few rules are worth knowing before you go:

  • Some free loaner skates sit in an on-site lending cabinet, donated by Delta Dental, Suburban Ice Arena, and community members.
  • Hockey is not allowed, and pucks and sticks stay off the ice.
  • Only figure or hockey skates are allowed on the rink. No street shoes, food, drinks, or pets in the skating area.
  • Borrowed skates go back into the cabinet tied together, and nobody walks on the concrete in skates.

The pavilion that held produce stalls in November holds a skating rink from December 1, and the market keeps running inside Meridian Mall.

Who you might find under the mall lights

The Township updates its expected vendor list every week, so the indoor lineup will be posted closer to each date. The list for Saturday, October 24, 2026, gives a sense of who sells at this market.

  • Produce and mushrooms: Titus Farms, Green Eagle Farm, Highwater Farms, Mycophiles Garden, Turnip the Beets Farm, Three Lakes Gardens, Diemer's Farm & Greenhouse
  • Bread and sweets: Stone Circle Bakehouse with its wood-fired breads, Freshies Bakery, DoughNation Bakery, Ignite Donuts, Pizzelles Plus, Uncle Calvin's Sweet Potato Pies
  • Meat, fish, and cheese: Circle F Meats & Mercantile, MI Great Lakes Fish Co., Olmsted Farm, Wilson's Farm Fresh Meats, The Cheese People of GR
  • Pantry and gifts: Clark Sugarbush maple syrup, Craig's Hilltop Honey, 45th Parallel Pickle, MI Soulsa, The Kilted Farmers pasta
  • Drinks: Boss Cider Company, Peculiar Coffee, The Fresh Grinds, The Country Mill cider
  • Lunch: Grampa's Pastys, Byrd Crepe, El Burrito Mexicano, Get Loaded Food Truck, From Scratch Food Truck

That's an October outdoor list. Not every vendor will move indoors, so check the weekly update before you go looking for a particular stall.

If the Get Loaded truck is the one you'll miss, it now has a permanent location. Get Loaded Kitchen, the first brick-and-mortar spot for the Get Loaded and From Scratch food trucks, began its soft opening on August 3 at 2398 Jolly Road. That's the former Tantay Peruvian Restaurant space, according to a report from 94.9 WMMQ.

Building a Saturday around the handoff

Because the market keeps running all season, a few Saturdays between now and Christmas line up well with Township events. All of the nature center programs below are at Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road.

  1. November 21, the last pavilion market. Shop Marketplace on the Green from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Then head to Critters and the Cold at the nature center from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. It costs $5 per person, and advance registration is recommended.
  2. December 6, coffee before the mall. Dogs and Coffee runs from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Sunday and costs $5 per person. It's the morning after the December 5 indoor market, so if you shop Saturday, Sunday is free for the trails and a cup of coffee.
  3. December 12, market by day, woods by night. Shop the indoor market from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., skate at the pavilion in the afternoon, and finish at Wine in the Woods from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Registration is required, and it's for ages 21 and up.
  4. December 19, last weekly market of the year. This is the final indoor Saturday before Christmas. After it, the market moves to the first/third/fifth Saturday schedule.

On a weekday, Harris Nature Center rents snowshoes Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for exploring Meridian Riverfront Park once there's snow on the ground.
