The East Lansing Exit You Stopped Taking: What's at Trowbridge Plaza Now

For a stretch of 2024 and 2025, the Trowbridge Road exit was something you drove past. The southbound US-127 and eastbound I-496 ramps were torn out and rebuilt, and your detours went elsewhere. Without your noticing, the grocery run, the lunch spot and the coffee stop all moved somewhere else too.

The ramps reopened in late 2025. The businesses at Trowbridge Plaza are now working openly to win back the drivers they lost. Between the ramp reopening and the next big phase of US-127 work, which starts in spring 2027, this fall and winter are the easiest stretch in years to make the corner part of your routine again.

What the ramp rebuild did to a corner most people only drove through

Trowbridge has always been a gateway. It's how a lot of traffic gets from US-127 and I-496 to Michigan State University. That made it easy to treat as a pass-through even before the construction.

The ramp work was part of a $204 million Michigan Department of Transportation investment along US-127 between I-96 and I-496. According to East Lansing Info, the Trowbridge ramps closed in summer 2024 and reopened in late 2025. Brooke Cummings opened Resilient Physical Therapy at 1028 Trowbridge Road right as the closures began. She told East Lansing Info that commuters simply stopped coming that way, and that the gas station, the eateries and the coffee shops all missed the drive-by traffic.

"This year it's finally better," Cummings told East Lansing Info. "It still gets closed at random times, and we don't get any warning."

Both halves of that quote hold up. The ramps are open again. MDOT also scheduled short closures after the reopening, including intermittent Trowbridge ramp closures for final lane markings the week after Thanksgiving 2025 and more short-term work through the week ending December 14. Short closures can still happen, so check Mi Drive before you head over.

The plaza is pitching itself as a wellness district, and the tenants support it

In September, the Trowbridge Business Association held Trowbridge Thrift & Thrive in the plaza. Seams Sewing & Mercantile ran mending demonstrations, Uptown Cheapskate and MSU's Spartan Upcycle had booths, the MSU Bikes Service Center taught DIY bike repair, and McLaren's Mobile Health Clinic parked in the lot. Susan Chalgian, who represents the association, told East Lansing Info that the area is "a walkable area" with "a good variety of restaurants," and called it more of a destination than other East Lansing gateways.

The tenant list explains the wellness pitch. Here's what's confirmed on the corner right now, based on each business's own website wherever possible:

A quick caution before you plan around the table. Swagath's contact page carries an older copyright date, so its hours may have changed. Blue Owl's Trowbridge store says it's open but doesn't list hours. Call before you make a special trip.

If you haven't been by in a while, Blue Owl is the stop you may not know about. Its own location page announces that the new store is open at 1034 Trowbridge. That puts real coffee a short walk from the grocery store and the yoga studio.

New Style Salon has the longest history here. Owner David Zumberg told East Lansing Info that the salon has been in Trowbridge Plaza since 1991, back when it shared the building with Goodrich's Shop-Rite. That grocery space is now Fresh Thyme. He also described the area losing customers when MSU phased out nearby student housing, and said it has taken about 20 years to come back.

"We really have been seeing the beginnings of more traffic from the Student Recreation and Wellness Center," Zumberg told East Lansing Info.

That center sits across Harrison Road at 810 Birch Road. Memberships are only open to MSU students, faculty, staff, alumni, retirees and certain other MSU affiliates, not the general public. Eligible alumni pay $80 a month or $475 a year. For everyone else, its value is the foot traffic it sends toward the plaza.

The turn that changed while you were away

If you come at Trowbridge from the east side of town, this is the part that will catch you, because the rebuild moved where eastbound drivers turn left.

MDOT's plan removed the eastbound median cut-through at Arbor Drive and the eastbound indirect left at Palmer Lane. Both were replaced by a single new eastbound indirect left about 800 feet west of Arbor Drive, with more room for cars to stack up and a wider turning radius. MDOT projected that the change would cut conflict points along that stretch from 28 to 15, a 46 percent drop. East Lansing City Council considered the request on January 23, 2024. The staff report said plainly that removing the Arbor and Palmer cut-throughs "have not been well received by residents," and acknowledged "the inconvenience the changes to Trowbridge Road will cause."

The city's agenda report also lays out the federal safety-program schedule for checking whether the redesign works:

  1. Planning, late 2021 to late 2025. Two years of design and two years of construction.
  2. Implementation, late 2025 to late 2026. One year the report labels "driver comfortability."
  3. Evaluation, late 2026 to late 2029. Three years of crash data, compared against the crash record from before the rebuild.

As of October 2026, we're near the end of that comfortability year. The plan assumed drivers would need about twelve months to get used to the new pattern. If you've avoided Trowbridge all that time, you're starting from scratch, and an unhurried Saturday is a better time to learn the turn than a weekday rush. MDOT also agreed to share speed, crash and volume data with the city on request, and to work with the city on adjustments if the design caused problems nobody expected.

Why this winter is the easy season

MDOT's current US-127 phase runs from south of Lake Lansing Road north to I-69. Since mid-August 2026 it has meant lane and ramp closures between Saginaw Street and I-69, with work scheduled to wrap up in November 2026. MDOT says the next phase will rebuild and realign US-127 from I-496 to Lake Lansing Road. That phase is expected to start in spring 2027 and take about three years. MDOT hasn't announced the traffic impacts yet, and nothing published so far names a Trowbridge ramp closure.

So for the next few months, the Trowbridge ramps are rebuilt, the phase to the north is finishing up, and the next one hasn't started. That's the most open the US-127 corridor around East Lansing has been in years.

A Saturday loop, start to finish

Here's one way to do the corner in a single morning, using the hours each business posts:

  1. Coffee at Blue Owl, 1034 Trowbridge. No hours are posted for this store, so check before you go.
  2. A class at East Lansing Hot Yoga. Book on its site.
  3. Lunch at Korea House, 978 Trowbridge. Saturday lunch runs 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  4. Groceries at Fresh Thyme, 940 Trowbridge. It's open until 9 p.m., so there's no rush.

On the way back, the eastbound indirect left west of Arbor Drive gets you heading east. You'll have used it once without traffic behind you, which beats learning it on a Monday morning.

Our team pays this kind of attention to every Greater Lansing corridor, including which ramps are open, which turns moved and which local shops made it through the construction.
